My name is Francis Nkurunziza, and I grew up in Kampala, Uganda. My journey into charity work began when I was a sponsored child. That opportunity opened many doors in my life, but it also revealed an important truth to me: children thrive most when their parents are empowered to care for them.
As I grew up, I often wished my own parents had been given the opportunity and support to play a more active role in providing for our family, rather than relying on outside help. That longing planted a seed in my heart. Over time, it grew into a strong conviction that the most sustainable way to help a child is to first empower the parent.
After many years of working with charitable organizations across Uganda, I founded Bazadde Care Uganda. The word “Bazadde” comes from the Luganda language and means “parents” or “those who care.” Our approach is intentionally different. While many organizations focus on sponsoring children directly, our mission is to invest in parents.
Through vocational training, business start-up support, mentorship, and spiritual discipleship, we equip parents with the skills and confidence they need to stand on their own and provide for their families with dignity.
When a parent graduates from our program and starts a small business, something powerful happens. Their children see them not only as a parent, but as a provider, a role model, and a source of hope. That restored sense of dignity and responsibility strengthens families and transforms communities.
Over the years, I have been blessed to travel, build friendships, and connect with a global family of supporters who believe in this vision. Together, we are working to break the cycle of generational poverty — one family at a time.
